Former President Barack Obama is no stranger to the music sphere. From popular playlists to holding meetings with some of music’s top names, the 57-year-old politician continues to show supporters, young and old, that he’s marching to a similar beat.
During a rally held in Las Vegas, Nev., on Monday (Oct. 22), Obama expressed his love for the reggaeton genre and one of its most recognizable stars at the moment, Colombia’s J Balvin. Captured on the “Mi Gente” artist’s Instagram account, Obama expressed his excitement over the genre and the Vibras singer.
According to CBS News, Obama gave a speech at the University of Nevada event in an effort to back Senate hopeful Rep. Jacky Rosen. Obama also stressed the need for voters to show up at the polls next month to combat the Republicans’ reported tactics. “There are states where Republicans are actively purging voter rolls right now,” he said. “It’s radical.”
Latino people account for 28.8 percent of Nevada’s population that boasts three million people, the U.S. Census Bureau states. Voting across the nation isn’t only imperative to underserved demographics, but this midterm election can shift power from Donald Trump’s controversial policies to opposing politicians that will hopefully champion equal rights.
Al Jazeera notes that Latino voters displaced by Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico and now based in New York, New Jersey, and Florida have massive control over the outcome of this midterm election.
