Benjamin Bratt will star as a talent manager hell-bent on reclaiming his reputation as a big-shot music mogul in Lee Daniels’ follow-up to FOX’s Empire. Bratt plays Jahil, an agent down on his luck when he decides to take on new clients, a girl group from Atlanta comprised of three sisters.
Following her famous role in Bessie, Queen Latifah will co-star as the girls’ surrogate mother and beauty salon owner. The untitled series will also feature San Antonio-born Nicholas González as the abusive foster father of Simoné, one of the group members (Brittany O’Grady). According to Deadline, the project is known as “Star,” however writers Lee Daniels and Tom Donaghy have not confirmed the title of the show.
Bratt’s new role, a return to FOX since 24: Live Another Day, will be more challenging than his previous authoritative television roles, such as the “prominent doctor” in shows like A&E’s The Andromeda Strain and ABC’s Private Practice or his well-known alias as the “crime-fighting detective” in NBC’s Law & Order.
Production on the show will begin in Atlanta this month.
