After news erupted this week of a proposal from the Republican party to create an oversight board that will “help” out the financial crisis in Puerto Rico, Democratic officials have shared their dislike for the plan—including presidential candidate Bernie Sanders.
In addition to voicing his opinion on Puerto Rico’s issue, he also addressed America’s issues as a whole during a rally Thursday night (Mar. 31) in the South Bronx, which featured Rosario Dawson and Spike Lee. And if that isn’t enough, he’s also made an appearance on Hot 97 earlier this morning.
Earlier this morning, Sanders’ campaign released a statement in a press release regarding his opposing view on the Republican party’s plans in regards to Puerto Rico. “There is a humanitarian crisis in Puerto Rico that Congress and the administration must address as soon as possible,” he said. “But let me be clear: Establishing an unelected oversight board that would be given the power to inflict even more economic pain on the 3.5 million American citizens in Puerto Rico would be a move in exactly the wrong direction. It must be defeated.”
Sanders goes on to remind us that “the economic situation in Puerto Rico will not be improved by closing more schools, firing more teachers, laying-off more workers, slashing pensions and suspending the minimum wage. Instead, Puerto Rico must be given the time it needs to restructure its debt and grow its economy in a fair way.”
And in closing, threw down the gauntlet. “Congress must act immediately to give Puerto Rico the same authority granted to every municipality in this country to restructure its debt under the supervision of a bankruptcy court,” he continued.

Before these statements, Sanders took to the streets of the South Bronx last night to discuss his plans for the future of our nation. He discussed everything from abortion rights to homeless children and the financial welfare of senior citizens. “When a woman has a baby she has the right to stay home with that baby, and not have to go back to work,” he said. “And when we are talking about women’s rights we are going to stand and make sure that every women in this country has the right control her own body.”
His views on the issue are timely considering Donald Trump’s recent controversial comments on the matter, claiming that women and doctors should be punished for practicing and undergoing abortions.
To top things off, your Democratic hero was recently live on Hot 97 giving daps to Ebro and discussing his campaign.
