Ahead of their U.S. leg of tour, Bomba Estéreo returns with a timely video for their self-love anthem, “Soy Yo” (“It’s Me”). The fourth track off their Grammy-nominated album, Amanecer, is a proper cut about respecting people for who they are, and about being tenderly proud of what makes you unique.
In a social climate breeding new language centered on what makes one person different than the next—i.e. racial makeup, sexual orientation, gender, aesthetic features, differently-abled bodies, etc. etc.—comes a song calling for the celebration of self, no matter how eccentric or idiosyncratic.
The video, filmed through vintage lens around New York City, finds a curious girl clad in jean overalls and pigtail braids, roaming the concrete jungle and stumbling upon her differently-talented counterparts. When she realizes she doesn’t look like other girls her age, or that she can’t dribble a ball or pop-and-lock like her peers, she joyfully busts a queer move and marches to the beat of her own drum.
