While thick eyebrows are noted to be on “trend” for the past few months, bold women have long dared to defy conventional beauty standards. Famed Mexican painter Frida Kahlo was world-renowned for her refusal to shave her heavy uni-brow, a decision that put her in a different league than fellow art peers. While Natalia Castellar isn’t a painter, the aspiring model’s notoriety increased as a result of her thick, dark eyebrows, which she refuses to shave down.
The 17-year-old Puerto Rican model was heavily teased for her bushy brows by her peers, almost prompting her to reduce their thickness. “It wasn’t until thick brows started trending that that I started feeling more confident. Now I don’t care if they stay trendy or not, I love my eyebrows. They set me aside from other models,” Castellar divulged to W magazine. “They’re my trademark, and I wish I would have embraced them sooner.”
She remains firm in her decision, choosing to ignore trolls who aim to destroy her confidence. “A lot of trolls leave nasty comments about my eyebrows, but I don’t give in and respond,” she added, “because that’s what they want. I just disabled my notifications. I want my social media to stay as positive as possible.”
