Dania Ramirez might play a loyal servant to pretentious snobs in Devious Maids, but in real life, she’s a successful actress, a heroic mommy and now, film director.

In her directorial debut, An American Alien finds Ramirez recounting her and her family’s stories of migrating from the Dominican Republic to the U.S.
“The misconception of an immigrant in America is that we’re not productive members of society,” Ramirez says. “I’m an immigrant. My parents are immigrant. My entire family are immigrant. And we came here for work.”
