With the presidential election exactly one month away, Donald Trump is trying to rally up all the votes he can get. The Republican candidate is seeking support from the state of Florida. Trump has made multiple appearances there including, “Little Haiti” in Miami. He’s expressed plans to open up more jobs for everyone, despite his xenophobic reputation against Latinos.
This is a strategic play on Trump’s side as he knows that winning the Latino vote is important because they are 24 percent of Florida’s population. That is the difference between possibly winning and losing this year’s race.
“Our support comes from all regions, all backgrounds and all walks of life,” said Trump in a speech. “You are cops and soldiers, carpenters and welders, accountants and lawyers, young and old, rich and poor, black, white and Hispanic. But above all else, you are American.”
First generation Cubans have traditionally supported the Republican party and because of this Trump may have a chance of winning the state. Florida was part of the reason George Bush and Obama won presidency. Bush won the election in both 2000 and 2004 with the support of Florida. Obama was able to do the same in 2008 and 2012. He even drew support for his plan to lift the Cuban embargo.
“Come November 8th,” continued Trump, “we are going to win Florida and we are going to win the White House.”
Let’s hope not.
