Social media is dragging Gina Rodriguez after she went on a rant about the “intersectional aspects” of Hollywood’s racial pay gap. Rodriguez claimed that black actresses take home bigger paychecks than their Latina and Asian counterparts during Neta Porter’s “The Television Debate,” discussing gender and racial inequalities within the industry, alongside fellow actresses Gabrielle Union, Ellen Pompeo and Emma Roberts.
“I get so petrified in this space talking about equal pay especially when you look at the intersectional aspect of it, right? Where white women get paid more than black women, black women get paid more than Asian women, Asian women get paid more than Latina women, and it’s like a very scary space to step into,” said Rodriguez. “Because I always feel like I fail when I speak about it because I can’t help but feel already so gracious to do what I do and I feel like, culturally, I feel like I was raised to just feel so appreciative of getting here.”
Twitter quickly put Rodriguez in check for her comments. For starters, film and TV critic, Rebecca Theodore-Vachon, noted that Colombian actress, Sofia Vergara, is T.V.’s highest-paid actress, according to Forbes.
Re: regarding Gina Rodriguez saying Black actresses are paid more than Latinx actresses – Sofia Vergera is the highest paid according to Forbes ($42 .5mil). Kerry Washington is the only Black actress on this list at #8: https://t.co/MrkiGDC0c2

Rodriguez was also called out for sourcing statistics that have nothing to do with Hollywood. Others brought up the 34-year-old actress’s refusal to acknowledge Afro-Latinx women in her fight for equal pay and diversity and pointed out examples of her steering the conversation away from black women.

Overarchingly Black women earn more compared to a white man’s income than Latinas. But (and this is a big but) white Latinas earn more Black women including Black Latinas. So Gina Rodriguez used a metric that is based on all women to talk about entertainment & ignored context
