Over the weekend, legendary actress and native Puerto Rican, Rita Moreno, was one of five recipients to receive the coveted Kennedy Center Honors.
“She is still a leading lady of her era, a trailblazer with the courage to break through barriers and forge new paths,” said President Barack Obama at a White House ceremony on Sunday (Dec. 6). “Eight decades after Rita Moreno first laid eyes on the Statue of Liberty, she continues to personify its promise: that here, in America, no matter what you look like or where you come from or what your last name is, you can make it if you try.”
Moreno, who is lauded for being the first Latina to win an Academy Award for her performance as Anita in West Side Story, was (deservedly) in great company; Jane the Virgin‘s leading starlet Gina Rodriguez and Hollywood vet Rosie Perez paid tribute to Moreno earlier that evening, but not without an epic usie to capture the moment first.
“Puerto Ricans in the White House! #kennedycenterhonors #RitaMorenoTribute,” captioned Rodriguez on Instagram.”
Congrats, Rita. Que orgullo!
