Jane The Virgin star Gina Rodriguez caught some backlash on Twitter Wednesday night (May 31), for her expressing her opinion about how to overcome sadness or depression.
The conversation began when a Twitter user asked Rodriguez what she believes is the secret to happiness. The Latina starlet’s response was that there isn’t a secret at all. She simply chooses to be happy.
No secret, it’s a choice. I am unhappy at times then I say, NOT TODAY SATAN YOU AINT STEALING MY JOY TODAY. Or I get ice cream or hug my mom https://t.co/EmMweZ2CBn

This immediately drew critiques from her followers, who seem to feel that the 32-year-old actress was trivializing mental health issues. Rodriquez conceded that in some cases the “choice” of happiness isn’t possible, but stood by what works for her.
True. But when it’s a mental health issue I seek help. I ask a therapist, friends, and just share how I’m feeling. Seems to help me. https://t.co/2UjnCTZddI

Here’s what some followers had to say in response to her thoughts on mental health:
When dealing w/ mental health like chronic depression, it is never that simple. Most times, depending on how deep, happiness is scarce.

Because you can afford to. I doubt you have to worry about how much a therapist cost.
