Only five days into Donald Trump’s presidency, and The People are already fed up. A website campaigning to impeach the 45th president of the United States from office is live and picking up traffic in light of Trump’s controversial decisions. ImpeachTrumpNow, which is run by civil rights groups Free Speech for People and RootsAction, has already received more than 100,000 signatures on its petition to kick Trump to the curb.
“Sign here to impeach Donald Trump now,” the homepage of the website site says. “From the moment he assumed the office, President Donald Trump has been in direct violation of the US Constitution. The President is not above the law. We will not allow President Trump to profit from the presidency at the expense of our democracy.”
The organizers seek to deliver more than one million signatures to Congress in order to “investigate whether sufficient grounds exist for the impeachment of Donald John Trump.”
“We’re going to organize in every county across the country, until Congress has no choice, but to uphold the Constitution and represent the people who elected them,” the site states. Organizers also claim that President Trump’s personal and recent executive decisions are grounds for impeachment.
In just a short amount of time the president has managed to piss a lot of people off. So far, he’s signed executive orders, pushing to advance the construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline on sacred Native American lands, an anti-abortion order that will threaten women’s reproductive rights, and another order to repeal Obamacare (with no replacement).
Out of the 45 presidents in United States history, only two of them have ever been impeached: Andrew Johnson and Bill Clinton. Johnson was formally impeached by the House of Representatives in 1868 for violating the Tenure of Office Act (1867), a law established in order to restrict the power of the president from removing office-holders without the approval of the Senate. Clinton was impeached in 1998 by the House of Representatives, after he lied under oath to a federal grand jury regarding the Monica Lewinsky scandal. So here’s to hoping Trump makes the third president to ever get the boot.
