The roses have come for reggaeton pioneer Ivy Queen thanks to new and old students of the genre speaking her high praises. The conversations are bound to continue on Red Bull Radio’s Bien Buena radio show, where Ivy Queen will discuss her lengthy and important career.
The live episode will take place Nov. 28 in Miami with hosts DJ Riobamba and Uproot Andy. The show will be held a panel style with Billboard Latin’s own Leila Cobo and journalist Janel Martinez. In addition to discussing Ivy Queen’s stellar career, the group will tackle the pivotal role women play in such a male-dominated industry.
After the live show, an afterparty will take place with a slew of local DJ’s from the Miami area who will spin their own versions of urban Latin music.
If you can’t be there in person, you’ll be able to stream the event on the station’s website. The event is sure to be very insightful considering how prominent and pivotal women are in Latinx music and have broken down barriers. In a recent interview with Remezcla, Ivy Queen detailed her experience breaking into the game despite the mishaps that were ascribed to her and how her legacy surpassed false expectations.
“The impact that I left in music – it was a hard one. I remember saying that I was in love with music and I asked for advice and people would say, “Oh you’re too short,” or “Oh, your voice makes you sound like a man,” like it was a curse,” she said.
“Looking back, you see, it was a gift; I put it to work,” she said. “I’m a woman of substance; I like substance. I’m a lyricist and also a writer, so it was a big impact for many people because they were not prepared. Reggaeton was talking about women and asses, and I was talking about empowerment, so it was like, “Hey, who’s this woman”
The live taping of Bien Buena will take place in Little Havana at Ball & Chain,1513 SW 8th St, Miami, FL 33135 from 7 pm to 10 pm ET.
