Former reality star and President-elect business tycoon, Donald Trump, has his heart set on Sen. Jeff Sessions as United States Attorney General. Not only is Sessions—“amnesty’s worst enemy”— the same man who helped Trump communicate his dangerous immigration policy and pick his V.P., he’s also the same man who, circa 2006, basically called the entire population of Dominicans in the United States worthless during a speech on the Senate floor.
“Fundamentally, almost no one coming from the Dominican Republic to the United States is coming here because they have a provable skill that would benefit us and that would indicate their likely success in our society,” he said. “They come in because some other family member of a qualified relation is here as a citizen or even a green card holder. That is how they get to come. They are creating a false document to show these are relatives or their spouses and they are married when it is not so.”
According to some stats Latina gathered, 35 percent of Dominican immigrants are employed in service occupations, which is more than the average 25 percent of all immigrant adults. What’s more, as Raquel Reichard points out, Dominicans have some of the highest rates of education attainment among Latinos. And, despite being one of the poorest groups in the country, about 16 percent of Dominicans have earned at least a four-year degree, compared with 12.9 percent of all U.S. Latinos.
