Less than 48 hours after Hamilton‘s near record-setting sweep at this year’s Tony Awards, word has come that Lin-Manuel Miranda’s debut Broadway musical will grace the silver screen.
According to Entertainment Weekly, Jon M. Chu is set to direct an adaptation of the 2008 play In The Heights. For those unfamiliar with Chu’s prior efforts, the California native previously directed Step Up 3D and Justin Bieber: Never Say Never.
A pleasant throwback to Miranda’s pre-Hamilton days, In The Heights chronicles the lives of several characters in the New York City neighborhood of Washington Heights, which is known for its large Dominican population.
While an adaptation for the film was slated to be produced by Universal, it was eventually scrapped in 2011. However, in the wake of Hamilton‘s success on Broadway, The Weinstein Co. quickly capitalized off Miranda’s burgeoning prominence and put a film adaptation of the actor/playwright’s breakout hit back into motion.
A screenplay for In The Heights has been penned by Quiara Alegría Hudes, who also wrote the book for the Broadway musical.
