The federal judge presiding over Juan “El Chapo” Guzman’s drug trafficking case in Mexico was killed in broad daylight early Monday (Oct. 17).
According to the Huffington Post, Judge Vicente Bermudez was shot in the head at close range while jogging outside his home near Mexico City.
Two assassins were involved in the execution-style slaying, the U.K. Mirror reports. A purported video of the murder, shows a man in all black jogging down the street unaware that another man (also dressed in all black) is jogging behind him.
In the graphic footage, the man reported to be Bermudez, is shot in the back of the head and falls to the ground as the shooter gets away in a waiting car.
Bermudez was taken to a local hospital where he died at approximately 8:30 a.m. local time. His murder is still under investigation.
The 37-year-old judge had presided over various drug cases in Mexico, including that of the Sanola Cartel leader. Bermudez previously blocked Chapo’s extradition to the United States, and ordered the extradition of Abigail Gonzalez Valencia, head of the Los Cuinis drug cartel.
Chapo had no involvement in Bermudez’s brutal murder one of his lawyers, Carlos Castillo, said Tuesday (Oct. 18). The drug lord is still expected to be extradited to the States sometime in 2017.
