In the event that you find yourself trying to make an argument as to why Latinos (documented or not) are invaluable to the United States of America, try not to reduce the ever-growing demographic to mere second class citizens. Or, in the words of Kelly Osbourne, those who “clean your toilets.”
In response to Donald Trump’s anti-immigrant tirade, where he referred to Mexicans and Latinos as criminals and rapists, The View host impudently asked, “If you kick every Latino out of this country, then who is going to be cleaning your toilets, Donald Trump?”
Never mind that Latinos have long played a key role in America’s socio-economic, political and cultural development (read: Carlos Santana, Young Lords Organization, Mendez vs. Westminster, housing market from 2000-2010, Kaufman Foundation reports on entrepreneurship, the Center study reports on purchasing power, those fried empanadas y’all hipsters love to devour after a night of drinking, etc etc — your welcome). Yet, Osbourne’s flippant commentary lacked even the most cursory of consideration.
Rosie Perez immediately came to the defense of Latinos before – wait for it – apologizing to Kelly for taking things out of context. “My apologies to @KellyOsbourne, I took your point wrong – #Trump #Latinos. My bad. You’re heart is so pure & righteous. I adore you @TheView.”
Shouts to Perez for taking the high road, or nah?
