Marvel found their own way to pay homage to impeccable R&B icon, Beyonce. According to reports, they are centering her likeness around an updated version of Marvel character, America Chavez.
Artist Joe Quinones used inspiration for America’s character – Marvel’s queer Latina superhero – that he pulled from Bey’s “Formation” video and her 2016 Super Bowl performance in which the Houston native protested police brutality. “Formation” meshes perfectly with America’s history of resistance against sovereignty.
The first Miss America debuted in the Marvel Mystery Comics back in 1943, while America Chavez was created by Joe Casey and Nick Dragotta. It first appeared in the in 2011 issues of Vengeance #1.
Beyonce isn’t the first to have her likeness appear in comic book, though. Rappers such as Run DMC, MF Doom, 50 Cent, De La Soul, Pete Rock, A$AP Rocky, among others have had their likeness re-created for comic book lovers. Queen Bey will appear on the cover, which hits newsstands in April, next to her teammates, Captain Marvel and Monica Rambeau.
