Remember mami’s “Sana sana colita de rana. Si no se sana hoy, se sana mañana”? This is sorta like that, only in reverse.
The case of Stanford University student Brock Turner – sentenced to a cute six months in jail after raping an unconscious woman behind a dumpster on the sidewalk – inspired more than a tidal wave of activism. After millions got wind of a graphic letter penned by his victim, a group of practicing witches gathered under a crescent moon Tuesday night (June 7) to bewitch Turner.
The Facebook event was organized by Melanie Elizabeth Hexen, according to Broadly., a midwife and belly-dance instructor who lives near Wilton, Iowa. She and her local coven, comprised of 13 women, were prompted to raise Turner’s name in supernatural power after feeling “outraged and helpless” over the guy’s sentence. More than 600 people had RSVPed to join in on the brujería.
Hexen even shared a sample ritual to the group, suggesting to use a black candle and a photo or representation of Turner, binding it with string, and chanting the following: “In the most holy name of Hecate, the Goddess of Life and Death, She who holds the key to the underworld, let this rapist meet justice. Let him be destroyed.”
She then suggested repeating 3x the following: “Brock Allen Turner we hex you. You will be impotent. You will know constant pain of pine needles in your guts. Food will bring you no sustenance. In water, your lungs will fail you. Sleep will only bring nightmares Shame will be your mantle. You will meet justice. My witchcraft is strong. Our witchcraft is powerful. The spell will work. So Mote it be.”
Hexen divulged to the VICE channel that many of the witches who participated on Tuesday are survivors of sexual assault themselves. They shared their own experiences on Facebook for support, and to amplify the hexing.
“Last night’s hex was very empowering—it was very uplifting to see everybody come together and do something about an issue we feel so strongly about,” said Danika Murphy, a participant of Hexen’s mystical gathering. “Hexing is very powerful. As I was always taught: If you can’t hex, you can’t heal.”
