New York has just approved the state bar application of a young immigrant without legal status, making Cesar Vargas the state’s first-ever undocumented lawyer.

According to Fusion, a court ruling found “no legal impediment or rational basis for withholding the privilege of practicing law in the state of New York from undocumented immigrants who have been granted DACA relief.” Authorized by President Barack Obama, DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) grants work status and defers deportation for undocumented immigrants who arrived to the country as children.
Vargas, who was brought illegally to the United States from Mexico at the age of five, is the co-director of DRM Coaltion and a graduate of the City University of New York School Of Law.

This monumental decision follows a 2014 ruling that allowed Sergio Garcia, also undocumented, to practice law in California.
