

After visiting Detroit, Michigan during this year’s North American International Auto Show, one of the most successful car makers and VIBE Viva’s gracious host, Nissan, proved just how much the Japanese company has in common with one of the most thriving neighborhoods in Motor City — Mexicantown.

Nissan, who’s had to overcome difficult times over its 80+ year history, impressed at the auto industry event with their latest concept models, some of which are built to be environmentally friendly and ecologically responsible.

Their motto “moving people and changing history” applies not only to the very spirit of Detroit (in the thick of recovering from its last recession), but especially to a little neighborhood minutes from the hustle and bustle where you can find the best Latin American eats the city has to offer.

Mexicantown, as it turns out, is the only neighborhood that actually experienced growth during the 2008 recession. Who knew? And today, much like the automobile manufacturer, Mexicantown prides itself on being resilient, self-sustaining and driving the culture forward. The only difference is that they do it serving authentic Latin cuisine like in Mexicantown Bakery, keeping a holy well of traditional libations like at Armando’s, and with an overall eccentric nightlife backed by the support of their own community.
Talk about using a little elbow grease to get the job done!
