How’s this for a “welcome to America” howdy-do?
A judge in San Antonio, TX told new American citizens during their citizenship ceremony that they should “go to another country” if they are unhappy with President-elect, Donald Trump.
“I can assure you that whether you voted for him or you did not vote for him, if you are a citizen of the United States, he is your President,” said federal magistrate judge, John Primomo, during a speech at the ceremony this past Thursday (Nov. 17). “He will be your president and if you do not like that, you need to go to another country.”
While his comments were a bit harsh, Primomo clarified what he really was trying to get at in a separate interview.
“He had hoped the speech be a message of unity,” writes the New York Daily News. “He claimed he did not vote for Donald Trump, and said he was simply encouraging the new citizens to have respect for the presidency and not taking a political stance.” During his speech, he also discussed that he “detests” athletes who choose to kneel during the National Anthem.
Despite the tough to swallow moments during their special day, the new U.S. citizens are still excited to be a part of the country.
“It is exciting to be an American,” said Mohammed Al Farradh, who is originally from Iraq. “I believe that America is bigger than whoever is in office.”
