Based on a 2007 novel by Jay Asher, 13 Reasons Why has captivated Netflix audiences of all ages and drawn some serious side-eye from parents and experts of the suicide prevention community. Nevertheless, actress, singer and 13 Reasons Why executive producer Selena Gomez is not letting harsh critiques overshadow the show’s overall popularity and success.
“I believed in the project for so long, and I understood what the message was,” she says. “I just wanted it to come across in a way that kids would be frightened but confused—in a way that they would talk about it because it’s something that’s happening all the time.”
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Netflix is strongly considering renewing the show for a second season, and a writer’s room is already at work.
