It’s been nearly two decades since on-air personalities Stretch Armstrong and Bobbito Garcia made a splash with their self-titled radio show that showcased hip-hop culture and put underground artists on the map. But after a lengthy hiatus, the duo is coming back and bringing their talents over to NPR. The Stretch Armstrong & Bobbito Garcia Show will return with new artists, new topics and more—and it’s coming sooner than you think.
In preparation for the new radio podcast, NPR released a one-minute trailer (above). In the video, Stretch and Bobbito reintroduce themselves, taking old fans and newcomers through a time machine of their past accomplishments. “It’s a crazy journey we’ve taken from doing a radio show on a radio station in 1990 with a console from the ’60s,” Stretch said. “You right. And now NPR. The programming there is fantastic,” Bobbito chimed in, laughing.
In the past, the Stretch & Bobbito show was notorious for its live studio sessions, freestyles, interviews and premiering demos exclusively on their WKCR station. Past artists included: Mobb Deep, Eminem, Nas, Biggie and Busta Rhymes. While the show will still hold a similar humor and rapport, it will open the discussion to art, sports, politics and of course, more music.
An official kick-off date has not been revealed as of yet, but the duo promises a summer launch. In addition to the radio show, The Stretch & Bobbito: Radio That Changed Lives documentary will be available on iTunes, Vimeo and Netflix on Oct. 22.
