Amid signing a mega deal with Univision’s Fusion Media Group, Calle 13 alumnus Residente announced that his newest album would be centered on his DNA. “I collaborated with talented artists; artists who the music industry doesn’t know because they haven’t paid attention to them for some time, artists who make music without expecting anything in return, artists whom I share DNA with, just as they shared their stories with me,” he said of his project.
The Puerto Rican emcee shares his journey to 10 destinations his DNA test linked him to, including Siberia and China, in his self-titled documentary, Residente. “Today the music industry has a priority: sell at all costs,” the 25-time Grammy Award-winner said. “The need to do something real and true is less important each day.”
Joined by his newfound cousin Lin-Manuel Miranda, Residente gives an inside look at his process of creating real music inspired by real stories in the first trailer for his film, which premieres at the 2017 South by Southwest Film Festival this month.
