Sneaker producer Vans and director Angela Boatwright together set out to capture the raw intensity of the Los Angeles barrio punk scene in Los Punks: We Are All We Have. The film premiered at the Slamdance festival earlier this year, and will be screening at the Brooklyn House of Vans on May 26.
“My main objective with the film was to tell some individual stories,” explains Boatwright to Billboard. “It was about giving them the space to tell their own stories and talk about themselves and express themselves.”
The movie explores the seedy subculture – for many an escape from the turmoils of living in the hood – that has existed for the past 40 years, and captures the plight of people coming from the lower income background.
“It took me a while to realize that most of the punks here were Latino,” Boatwright adds. “They are all interesting stories. And very American stories.”
Los Punks will also be released on iTunes on May 27. Peep the official trailer below.
