The phone number curve is very real. Some women have no problem rejecting a guy before he even says hello. But for those other women who will politely indulge him in a conversation knowing you’re not even remotely interested in him, you know what it’s all leading to. That “can I hit you up sometime” comment is inevitable. And you don’t want to be rude, but giving him your number is just out of the question. So flip through the next few pages to see how to avoid the phone number exchange.

Keep it short.
Maybe you’re not willing to completely blow him off. If so, just stick to a “hi” or a wave. Most guys won’t think it rude if you at least acknowledge them giving you attention.

Keep the conversation neutral.
Don’t give any personal information besides maybe a first name—and that you can even make up. And if he starts getting more insistent in asking more about you or seems like he may ask for your phone number, pretend you see someone you were supposed to be meeting and dash off.

Ask for his instead.
If you can’t seem to leave the conversation before he goes in for the kill, just ask for his instead. That way, you can control your interaction with him from that point on.

Use the boyfriend excuse.
Telling a guy you have a boyfriend used to be a full proof way to not give out your phone number. But now some guys will claim that they “just want to be friends.” This is when you reiterate your being in a relationship and politely tell him that your boyfriend (real or not) is the only friend you need.

Try the stranger excuse.
I know your parents told you no to talk to strangers when you were younger but that rule didn’t just expire the day you turned 18. Tell him you’re not comfortable giving out your personal number to someone you just met.

Tell him you’re busy.

Tell him your phone’s dead.
This is a tricky one because some men will stop their pursuit here, seeing that you aren’t interested in giving them your phone number, dead or not. But others will counter by pulling out their fully-charged phone and telling you that you can just put you phone number in theirs. That’s when you either decline completely or…

Give him the wrong number.
Okay, he swindles you into doing exactly what you’ve been trying not to do: give him your phone number. No worries, just give him to wrong one. You can even kill two birds with one stone by giving him a friend’s number who you want to pull a prank on. And if he tries to call you to check if it’s the wrong number, refer back to the dead phone excuse.

Come up with the most outlandish lie.
Boyfriends, safety, and dead phones don’t seem to work on a guy? Come up with the craziest lie you can think of—something so ridiculous that it’s obvious that you’re not giving him you phone number. Like a unicorn ran up you phone bill and you have no more minutes for the rest of the year. Hopefully he gets the hint.

Tell him your just not interested.
Sometimes the truth is really the best excuse of them all. He’ll appreciate you honesty and will probably respect you a lot more for being honest with him.
