As we approach the last few days of 2013, we’re eager and ready to throw out the old and bring in the new! But before we enter 2014, there are few things we MUST leave behind.
Flip the pages to see what made our list.
Thank you Miley Cyrus for resurrecting what’s been going on for years, but God willing, we won’t have to deal with the crazed phenomenon for 2014. If the new year has any chance for a clean slate, twerk videos and conversations around it will lay to rest. We get it. You love to bend over and prance around assed out, but haven’t we overdosed on twerking enough for a lifetime?
Yes, we get it—tis the year of the “turnup!” Glad you all got it your system and overused a word that pushed you to the highest of levels.
Do you think we can turn it OFF for the new year?
3. Celebrity Kid Stalking
North West and Blue Ivy are probably this year’s most Googled babies. There is an entire online empire available for us to kid stalk our favorite celebs. If Blue Ivy’s hair isn’t neatly compacted into a bun, we know about it. And is it not a tad bit scary that we accused Kim of waxing her daughters eyebrows?
There is simply WAY too much access and obsession around someone else’s child.
4. Fitz & Olivia
In the land of Scandal, we’re just about done with the dragged out Fitz and Olivia love affair. Kerry Washington has played one episode too long as Fitz’s part time hooker enough for us to realize that this relationship just won’t go anywhere.
5. Kanye’s Untamed Rants
Now that Ye has declared his love by popping the question to Kimmy, maybe (here’s hoping) he’ll be a little tied up in wedding plans and bouquet picking to deliver more untamed media rants. I’m not sure if the role as the “angry black man” will be keeping our attention for much longer. And I’m sure we aren’t the only ones who are Kanye’d out.
6. No New Friends
Don’t let Drake sell you lies. New Friends ARE AWESOME! Get you some new friends girl, and retire that lame adage. In fact, make it a goal to meet new types of people in 2014.
7. Instagram Selfies
Undeniably, selfies ruled the year, especially considering our own President is flicking it up at funerals. Ladies, can we please find some inner confidence in 2014 to subside the obsession with uploading personal selfies. Let’s start filtering out what qualifies for decent IG pics, and it isn’t you flashing cheeks or puckering a kissy face to your followers.
8. The Stripper Pole
Stripper poles are everywhere and the obsession with mastering one is way too real. Every girl wants to adopt some stripper traits.
9. Light Skin & Dark Skin Conversations
In a perfect world, there wouldn’t be a line in the sand separating dark skinned and light skinned women. Reality shows like Gossip Game highlighted the fact that there is still an ongoing conversation regarding complexions and the perceptions of society. Times are a-changing lads, and it’s about time we start removing those color barriers from our “problems.”
10. The entire “ohhh kill em” movement
The “ohh kill em” disease still has no vaccine? Vine introduced us to Terio, who become the famed face of the entire “ohh kill em” movement that has celebrities and everyday people creating their own renditions. And we just can’t wait to be over!
11. Half Bald Heads & Tacky Hair Color
At the risk of trying new things for the new year, crazy color hair and the Cassie cuts are officially a “no no.”
12. Natural Hair Gangs
Nobody should make you feel bad for throwing in your 22 inches of fine Remy hair. Natural hair isn’t for everybody and not everybody wants to take pride in their fro and curls. Even though the natural hair movement is beginning to slowly take over, don’t feel pressured into signing the separation papers from your perms if you are not ready.
Don’t worry, there are still some women (like myself) who enjoy the flexibility of weaving it up and pressing it down. Maybe we should kick start a #PermGang twitter page in 2014?
A word that isn’t so new, but definitely overused, we look forward to retiring from our everyday vocabulary.
13. Ain’t Shit Men
Leave behind the baggage of 2013, including all the “ain’t shit men” you stay connected to. If your plan is to start a new slate for the new year that means waving goodbye to any toxic relationships that may be holding you back from a fresh start. Assess the men in your life and see who is fit to step over into the new year with you.
