2013 was definitely a tough year for most of us and 2014 will probably have even more in store for us. When life beats you down, there’s nothing like a good book to lift your spirits. We did some research and created a list of inspirational books to not only uplift you through the new year, but more importantly, the cold winter!

1. Acts of Faith
Iyanla Vanzant is mostly known for her inspirational books and speeches. Although this book does say it is specific to people of color, there is definitely some wisdom that we all can take from it. The book starts in the new year beginning with January 1st as the first passage and ending with December 31st. The object is to read a passage a day.

2. Hope on a Tight Rope by: Cornel West
Cornel West offers open-hearted wisdom, philosophy, and speech excerpts through a book of inspirational collections. West is arguably the most profound, courageous and brilliant black intellectual of the 21st century.
3. The Tao of Wu by: The RZA
Unorthodox and unlike any other book of wisdom, Tao of Wu, is a read about the rapper RZA and his journey through the Wu Tang Clan. The book is written in a relatable yet clever language and is definitely a book of spiritual and mental growth.
4. The Confident Woman Devotional by: Joyce Meyer
Joyce Meyer’s only #1 New York Times Best Seller. Meyer taps into the issues and concerns facing women daily, while providing (much needed) encouragement.
5. Letters to a Young Sister by: Hill Harper
Hill Harper is a man of many talents. His book, Letters to a Young Sister is an inspirational book for young women. In it Harper gives young women the chance to communicate with prominent, successful women on their experience. Although this book focuses on our younger women, this is definitely a read that all ages can relate to and appreciate.
6. The Prophet by: Kahlil Gibran
Although this book is not new, it still holds the same values and issues that we face today. Kahlil Gibran is a famous Lebanese philosopher. His book is divided into chapters dealing with Love, giving, marriage, relationships and much more.
7. Yesterday, I Cried: Celebrating the Lessons of Living and Loving
Vanzant is giving us our daily dosage of inspiration. Yesterday I Cried is not only a book of inspiration, but it is also a book that celebrates life and loving the life you live. In this book she uses her own personal experiences to show that life’s hardship’s can become life lessons that enable us to grow, heal and learn more about ourselves.
