After giving birth to premature twin boys, a 56 year old woman has died.
Lisa McLaughlin, a lawyer who went on to medical school and became a doctor, and her husband Mike had been dealing with infertility struggles and in-vitro fertility treatment for over ten years, when she finally became pregnant in spring of 2014. “She was very, very careful. She did exactly what she was supposed to do,” her husband said.
After preparing for the boys, Lisa gave birth to Jordan and Dylan on Dec. 27, 2014. Though they weighed only three pounds each, they were healthy. McLaughlin was having pains a few days later, but she thought it was incisional pain from giving birth by C-section. Ultimately, it was bowel obstruction that killed Lisa in her home on Jan. 4.
“She was just on cloud nine [after giving birth],” Mike remembered. “That’s the happiest I’ve probably seen her in my life. [Death] wasn’t even in her vocabulary.”
Her husband Mike plans to return to their home in Omaha, Nebraska to raise the two boys on his own, though he says he’s glad Lisa was able to experience the life she had been wanting to bring into the world, even if only for such a short time.
