YouTube is not only a site to host funny animal videos or bloopers but it also exposes upcoming artists. If you have what it takes to belt out Beyoncé-infused ballads or bring some comedy to a deep Erykah Badu track, you might strike covers-of-songs gold in terms of global recognition. Check out this list of some of the top covers you should listen to, new and old, that still creates waves on the Internet.–Camille Augustin
1) Karina Pasian “Halo”
This acoustic version of Beyoncé’s ballad is taken up another level as Pasian’s voice pierces your ears, in a good way. Her angelic tone is so crisp and soft but still manages to hit those notes B laid on the original track.
This British babe took the dance out of Rihanna’s hit song and slowed the tempo down. Her cover is brilliant, showing off her powerhouse vocals but still capturing the essence of the melody.
This high-pitch note hitter rose to recognition after he sang backup for Erykah Badu on “Window Seat.” With 258 videos and over 5 million views, he is sure to be a rising star in the R&B realm if given that big break. His cover of Mary J. Blige’s “Crispy Chicken” Burger King song is creative as well (and worth a listen).
4) Karmin “Look At Me Now”
When Busta Rhymes rapped rapid-like lyrics everyone tried to keep up with the flow. Some failed but some mastered it as Nick and Amy who make up the group Karmin displayed in their video. The video has over 76 million views.
Maybe these two sisters are too young to sing about relationships but there is no denying the power and emotion in their voices. The budding ladies cover everyone from Adele to Nina Simone. Check out one of their biggest video below!
6) VanJess “Work Out”
Take a break from a long day and get your spirit lifted to this acoustic cover of J. Cole’s smash “Work Out.” These two women make it look effortless from their ad-libs to their sing-rapping style.
