On Sunday evening (Feb. 12), the 54th Annual Grammy Awards kicked off live at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, CA. The night was filled with show stopping performances, big time and first time Grammy winners and a heartfelt tribute to the late Whitney Houston.
VV rounded up 7 memorable moments and performances of what took place on music’s biggest night. –Shenel ‘Reneé D.’ Hightower
1. LL Cool J’s Prayer
The prayer for Whitney Houston at the show’s opening was touching. People around the world are still in shock that this iconic woman is gone. These are very sad times for the music family and he showed the world that her family and friends are not the only ones who are mourning.
2. Bruno Mars
Bruno Mars did a great job with his performance. To me it was one of the best of the night, but his hair is what really kept me tuned in. The Jimmy Neutron look seems to be in and everyone that has it is rocking the hell out of it!
3. Chris Brown
Call it a comeback?! This was Brown’s first Grammy performance since the ‘Rihanna incident’ and it was really good. He had a glow in the dark set and his crew of backup killed it. It seems that he had a good time on stage and was happy to be back. To add to his big night, he also won the Grammy for best R&B album for F.A.M.E. Chris Brown kept a low profile and had an overall good night. Kudos to him!
4. Katy Perry
Her performance was amazing. She kept the crowd entertained and wanting more! I couldn’t stop thinking about her and Russell Brand’s divorce because of the song she chose, but as a female who’s gone through many breakups, I feel her pain. That’s right girl let him know what he had!
5. Adele
The biggest winner of the night is finally coming into her own and opening up. Her performance was great. She held the audience captive with her voice. It is clear to see that she is a more comfortable performer, and she is growing as an artist.
6. Whitney Houston Tribute by Jennifer Hudson
Jennifer Hudson sung “I Will Always Love You,” in honor of Whitney. Was it amazing? We’ll leave that for you to decide. She did a good job seeing as how they only had one day to pull it together.
7. Nicki Minaj
Her outfit, a Red Riding Hood-inspired Versace original, was a definite head turner. It was something you didn’t want to look at but couldn’t keep your eyes off. As for her performance, it was creepy and people didn’t get it. As a fan, I was not pleased but thinking about it from a business standpoint, people were talking. If that was her goal for the night, that’s what she got.
