Oh, the struggles of being a non-cook on Thanksgiving. You’re scared to step into the kitchen, but you don’t want to be the lazy person that sits on the couch waiting for their plate. You’ve tried before and failed miserably. Whether you burned the casserole, lit something on fire or ruined the turkey, you’ve been banned from dipping your incapable hands into any Thanksgiving dishes. Fortunately, there are a bevy of ways to contribute without feeling like a complete loser.

Volunteer to watch the kids
I know: this doesn’t sound fun, but this is what happens when you choose to stay out of the kitchen. Pray they’re well behaved and distract them by coming up with games until the food arrives.

Mix, chop and toss
This is your chance to be in the kitchen and still look like you’re doing something worthwhile. Volunteer to mix the salad dressing or cut a vegetable. Neither of those things require that much skill and the chef of the house will appreciate it.

Pretend you like sports
Hey, maybe you actually like watching sports, too. Whatever the case may be, plant your behind in front of the television and pretend that whatever you’re watching is the greatest thing you’ve ever seen. Chances are you won’t be bothered if you look this distracted.

Stick to the drinks
You may be a disaster in the kitchen, but anyone can pour liquor into a cup. Look up some Thanksgiving recipes online and play bartender for the day. If everyone drinks enough, they’ll forget you didn’t help with the cooking.

Take on cleaning duties
I know, I know: noone wants to clean. But, it has to get done. This is usually the designated chore for whoever doesn’t cook, so come to terms with it now.

Buy (and/or pretend to make) dessert
The perfect finish to any Thanksgiving is dessert. And it’s not hard to find. Get over to your local grocery store and pick up an assortment of pies, cakes and ice creams. Noone will turn it down.

Play the DJ
Set the mood right and play DJ. You might even sneak some Christmas tunes in there. It’s never too early for that in my opinion.
