Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes is an angel taken well before her time. Her shocking death after a tragic car accident in 2002 not only left us broken-hearted and tearful, it was a loss that resonated around the world. Fourteen years later, her spirit lives on through her fans and bandmates, Chilli and TBoz. Today marks what would have been her 44th birthday and surprisingly, we didn’t know all we thought we did about the famous femcee. She revealed her nickname came from an admirer: “A guy gave me a pick up line and said he was attracted to my left eye.” It’s also been reported that Michael Bivins of New Edition inspired the name “Left Eye.”
She adopted a daughter and named her Snow.
Her “Waterfalls” verse is carved on her tombstone.
The rapper almost took Hollywood by storm as she was considered for one of the main roles in Josie and the Pussycats.
She inked a deal to release an album in her pseudonym name, “N.I.N.A.”—New Identity Not Applicable.
She mentored the group Blaque, helping them get a deal with Columbia Records. She also executive produced their self-titled debut album.
TLC wasn’t the only group privy to Lisa’s lyricism. She was featured on Donell Jone’s second album, U Know What’s Up, N’Sync’s “Space Cowboy,” and Spice Girl’s Mel C’s “Never Be The Same Again.”
She started the Lisa Lopes Foundation anchored by her spiritual motto, “Energy never dies…It just transforms.” Her charity aids abandoned youth with resources to help their situations.
