It’s no secret that when it comes to the fashion industry, minorities are just that, minorities—especially on the modeling scene.
The aesthetic of beauty is one-sided or, to put it simply, white. Yet, this London Fashion Week was given a total face lift. Indian-born designer Ashish Gupta, known as the “King of Sequins,” made a political and cultural statement with his Spring 2015 collection, making it our favorite show of fashion month, thus far. But it had nothing to do with clothes, it was the models. In a political rebellion in response to the fashion industries blind spot, a motley crew of young, black males and females pranced up and down the runway in Gupta’s exuberant motifs of signature sequins. Yasss!
