Thanks to graphic designer-turned-toy-maker Nickolay Lamm, Barbie gets a shocking but very much real makeunder with “Normal Barbie”.
But what’s normal one may ask? According to Lamm, “normal” includes cellulite, freckles, acne, and CDC-based body measurements. While we all know that Barbie is a manufactured doll whose impossible ideals of beauty have negatively affected our society, Lamm is challenging old school standards and introducing the first fashion doll made according to typical human body proportions to promote realistic beauty standards.
In a world where articial enhancements are becoming the new norm it’s good to see real still exists. “I wanted to show that reality is cool,” Lamm told TIME. “And a lot of toys make kids go into fantasy, but why don’t they show real life is cool? It’s not perfect, but it’s really all we have. And that’s awesome.”
