BB (beauty balm) creams, concoctions that essentially mash primer, moisture, serum, and color into one, may be one of the biggest beauty stories of ’12. Drugstore and luxury labels alike are spurning them out like the latest surreptitious tools towards the fountain of youth.
As many renowned makeup companies have awoken to the fact that more shades are imperative towards catering to a wider range of customers, any brown-skinned sistas looking for another beauty fix may be hard-pressed to find a hue that really works, especially in BB cream-land where a shade dubbed “dark” appears more pallid.
Yet, there are some notable brands that didn’t forget about all of our shades in the spectrum and have BB creams and tinted moisturizers that’ll bring you one step closer to a flawless face. Here are the top five products to consider.–Carmen Shardae Jobson
NARS Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturizer Broad Spectrum SPF 30, $42
With enough coverage to act as your foundation (albeit a less heavier version), this veil of color is luxuriously hydrating. You can feel the bedding of aqua smooth ingredients once you disperse the moisturizer, and all the colors have transatlantic names like Martinique and Polynesia (the two darkest of the nine hues).
Maybelline New York Dream Fresh BB 8-in-1 Beauty Balm, $8-9
Out of all the drugstore brands offering BB creams, Maybelline is the only one thus far with shades for gals that fit into the medium and dark categories. You’ll actually dispense the cappuccino or chocolate-y tinged shades you requested out of this tube.
Stila Sheer Color Tinted Moisturizer Oil-Free SPF 20 $34
This brand actually has a beauty balm item, but you’ll be better off with their expanded line of tinted face lotions. Wonderfully natural-looking with medium coverage, Sheer Color shields your imperfections by blending easily. You may not need much powder with this one. Though a subtle glimmer is present, it finishes relatively matte.
Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer SPF 20 $43
What may seem like a brand that specifically caters to the fairer-skinned bunch, this Tinted Moisturizer is impressively enduring with enough pigment that isn’t ashy or too red-based (which is often the biggest faux pas from non-black centric brands). This works as a great creamy base for foundation or concealer if you plan to wear a more full face look. This also comes in an oil-free formula.
As the founder of one of the leading makeup brands for ethnic women, Iman responded to the disappointment of not enough shades of BB cream. This December, Iman Cosmetics will offer six crèmes that will smoothly blend into at least 35 different shades of tan, nutmeg and cocoa colors. Seems like Iman got our golden undertones just right!
Available in six colors, e.l.f.’s tints all seemingly have a toasted almond nuance. while there isn’t a color that resembles a cup of espresso, a decent amount of women of color with yellow tones can work with this mini collection that’s super affordable. It contains extracts of aloe, cucumber and vitamins, A, E and C but does include mineral oil. E.l.f. loyalists appreciate its semi-dewy touch.
