Jay Z took it back to his New York City hometown tonight (Sept. 26) to headline the 2014 Global Citizen Festival. A free show gifted to volunteers who took action against world poverty, the concert series also included performances by The Roots and No Doubt.
Bringing a slice of the setlist and visuals from his On The Run tour with Beyonce, Hov blessed the crowd with hits including “Empire State Of Mind,” “I Just Wanna Love U (Give It 2 Me)” and “Niggas In Paris.” He also brought another key element from the tour: Beyonce herself. After holding down the majority of his solo set, Jay Z returned to the stage from a brief intermission with Mrs. Carter in tow.
Performing their rendition of “Holy Grail,” Beyonce’s (kind of) surprise appearance was met with screams from the Central Park audience as she donned a white blouse, high-waisted black pants and her blinged-out wedding ring. The two ended the night with the same finale as their record-breaking tour: “Young Forever,” complete with the background video of their most candid family moments.
The goal of the Global Citizen Poverty Project is to end extreme poverty by 2030.Watch Jay Z and Beyonce support the movement on VIBE.
