“You worry about the wrong things, the wrong things.” – K. West (Paranoid)
Beyoncé and Kim Kardashian have a lot in common.
I know this might upset some of you Bey stans out there that believe that your King is in a stratosphere all her own, where a lowly reality TV star/serial girlfriend is unworthy of her time and attention. But in reality, a friendship–however casual–between the Pop music titan and the branding behemoth makes perfect sense. They’re both the kind of girls you marry.
Before we go any further, let me clarify what makes a woman “the marrying kind.”
I asked about 15 guys–varying in age, relationship status and life experiences–what qualified a woman as “wife material,” and the answers were overwhelmingly consistent.
“A woman with confidence” was the first answer; someone who doesn’t wear her insecurities on the surface makes for a good mate in case someone out there tries to rattle her cage. Drive was also a big factor. Women with their own goals and purpose fall easier into the “wifey” category than women who tend to be aimless or design their lives around a man. And finally, the “R.O.D.C.” as my friend @Kozza called it. That’s the ride or die woman who, no matter what, has her man’s back, which makes for the best partner in life.
So if we’re using those three attributes–confidence, drive and R.O.D.C.–then it makes perfect sense that Bey and Kim spend time with one another.
Confidence is at the cornerstone of the Beyoncé brand. And “drive” might as well be the Houston songbird’s middle name. For years, Bey has sung about knowing her own worth and backed it up in real life with precise and calculated personal and professional moves. Even if you’re not a fan of her music, it’s hard to take anything away from her when it comes to work ethic and ambition. She continues to grow and tackle new areas consistently.
The same argument could be made for Kim. Despite a humiliating beginning to her public persona, the media mogul still held her head high and built her brand on style and beauty. Oprah may not know what Kim is famous for, but the millions of people who watch her shows, buy her cosmetic products, shop her stores and stand in line at her events don’t seem to care. Kim has turned being beautiful into an empire and any empire is hard work. Sure she’s got mega-momager Kris Jenner, but even your team can’t motivate you to get out of bed every morning.
When it comes to their men…
Beyonce is Jay-Z’s biggest fan. While she baked baby Blue Ivy last year, she traveled the world alongside her husband, sitting front row at every Watch The Throne show, singing along to every lyric. Four years of marriage, touring, recording, non-stop tabloid rumors and constant hounding from the press, Bey is the perfect Bonnie to his Clyde. As she said during the 2011 Billboard awards: “I love me some Jay-Z,” and it shows.
While Kim’s relationship with Kanye is still relatively new, we’re already seeing telltale signs of her investment. From her newfound love of Jordan’s to putting a few things on hold for the European leg of WTT, Kim is all in. (And who can forget the sick Lambo she copped for his birthday?) And if her dating history tells us anything it’s that when Kim is in, she’s in.
There’s an age-old saying, birds of a feather flock together, and the same should go for women. When we choose our friends, it should be based on common interest, values and a similar passion for how we live our lives. What shouldn’t weigh too heavily are past sextapes, quickie marriages and how the public perceives them.
Is Kim a good person? Does she work hard at her own goals? Will she be loyal?
Those are the things that should matter to Bey–will Kim be a good homegirl that she can bring around her family? Clearly, the answer is yes. Seems like everything else is only a problem for ya’ll. —JasFly (@JasFly)
