Yesterday morning (Jan 15) the nominations list for the 87th Oscar Awards were announced.
Some of the nominees were to be expected, such as Michael Keaton, Maryl Streep, and basically everyone associated with the film “Birdman” (we all must make a mental note to watch, since the film cleaned up at the Golden Globes). Though there are people who are noticeably missing from the roster of nominees: people of color.
This year, no black actor or director were nominated this year. None. Not even David Oyelowo for his performance in Selma, nor Ava DuVernay for directing it. Beyond The Lights’ director Gina Prince-Bythewood didn’t see much recognition this awards season either, even though she received praise for her work in the film.
Although Selma is up for Best Picture, and “Glory” (which already took home a Golden Globe) is up for Original Song, the snub for black actors and directors leaves little to get too excited for.
