A movement sparked by Beverly Bond to celebrate women or color, the Black Girls Rock! awards show aired last night (Nov. 4) on BET.
Before co-hosts Tracee Ellis Ross and Regina King kicked off an evening of fly fashions and empowerment, several of our favorite ladies–including actress Gabrielle Union, 106 & Park host Ms. Mykie, TV personality La La Anthony, former Editor-in-Chief of Essence Susan L. Taylor and CEO of BET Debra Lee–walked the red carpet and shared what characteristics make a VIBE Vixen.
“We’re fierce but can do whatever we want to do,” Lee says, while La La Anthony adds: “[It’s] someone who’s confident and doesn’t let anyone tell them that they can’t do anything. I was happy to be on the first cover and represent that.”
“I want it to represent bodaciousness,” Taylor chimes in. “We need Black women to be really serious about loving ourselves. Let’s redefine Vixen!”
Union sprinkled in her opinion of a well-rounded Vixen, “Smart, educated, fly, cultured, well traveled, open-minded and a voter.”
