Who didn’t love Martin, Living Single, and The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air growing up in the ’90s? Those black sitcoms bring back such a nostalgia that make us long for the days of real comedic television, opposed to recycled and ratchet reality shows.
But some of the iconic African American sitcoms didn’t only flourish in the ’90s, the new century brought with it some classic shows of its own. Shows that in fact have been able to break through and find a loyal black audience. Several others crossed over and became influential successes with viewers, regardless of race or age.
These sitcoms have had a big impact on pop culture and the black community, making the characters relatable. The unforgettable Kyle family of My Wife and Kids—which was (at the time) the closest thing we had to a modern Huxtable family in the early 2000s.
