During Sunday night’s Oscars, comedian and late night host Chelsea Handler took over the Huffington Post’s Twitter account, live-tweeting the happenings of the annual awards ceremony. However, Handler’s raunchy humor went a little too far when she tweeted some insensitive comments aimed at actress Lupita Nyong’o and a few others.
Right after Lupita Nyong’o’s win for Best Supporting Actress, she tweeted, “#AngelinaJolie just filed adoption papers #lupitanyongo #Oscars.” Handler’s comedic attempts continued, adding, “#AngelinaJolie’s adoption went through #sidneypoitier,” referencing the legendary actor who presented an award with the humanitarian.
During her roast, the Chelsea Lately host also used the platform to promote her new book, Uganda Be Kidding Me. “Congratulations #12yearsaslave Go to Africa or buy #ugandabekiddingme http://amzn.to/1de1ka9 #aheadofthecurve #Oscars,” she wrote. She even went as far as making the late Nelson Mandela a punchline: “#NelsonMandela looks great #abc #resurrection -Oscars”.
The Twitterverse was not amused by the comedian’s tweets and accused Handler of being distasteful and racist. After the backlash Handler offered a trivial apology for her social media antics .
The Huffington Post also issued a statement from Senior Executive Director Perri Dorset saying, “The views expressed by Handler are not ours.”
Vixens, did Chelsea go too far?
