In preparation for Super Bowl Sunday, products are gearing up for their big time advertisements, but a few 60-second spots are rubbing viewers the wrong way.
Beverage big-wig Coca-Cola released a commercial depicting a group of four people racing in the desert towards a mirage of a giant Coke bottle. A bus full of showgirls, a few cowboys and a “badlander” sabotage each other along the way but one person is left behind–an Arab male struggling with his camel.
“The Coke commercial for the Super [Bowl] is racist, portraying Arabs as backward and foolish Camel Jockeys, and they have no chance to win in the world,” Imam Ali Siddiqui, president of the Muslim Institute for Interfaith Studies, typed in an email sent to the Huffington Post.
The Arab-American community is calling for Coke to change the portrayal of their culture in the ad before airing it on Feb. 3.
