While everyone was captivated by the glitz and glamour of the EMMYs, I couldn’t help but notice the lack of African American actresses in the audience and nominations for this year’s Primetime Emmy Awards. While this has remained an ongoing debate throughout the entire mainstream industry, it should be noted that there are a slew of Vixens of color to look out for on your television screens this fall! Here’s an amazing cast.–Nicole Brown
The Office and The Mindy Project
For six years, she’s made us laugh as the hilarious Kelly Kapoor and staff writer on The Office. Now that the comedy is nearing its end, the Indian-born actress is breaking out on her own by starring in and executive-producing The Mindy Project, which premieres September 25 at 9pm on FOX.
Guys With Kids
We haven’t seen Tempestt in a half-hour comedy series since her days as Vanessa Huxtable on The Cosby Show. This year, she’s getting back to her roots (and getting rave reviews!) for her role as working mom alongside Anthony Anderson on the Jimmy Fallon-produced Guys With Kids (Wednesdays at 8:30 p.m. on NBC).
Taraji’s had a lucrative career in movies, but last fall, she took her talents to television as Detective Joss Carter on CBS’ Person of Interest. It has since been renewed for a second season set to debut in the coming months. We’ll be tuned in!
Although Washington turned heads as a presenter at this year’s Emmy Awards, she was missing from the nominees list. Let’s hope that changes next year with a nomination for her work as Olivia Pope on the Shonda Rhimes-produced series Scandal. The second season premieres September 27 at 10 p.m. on ABC. Keep an eye out for fellow castmate Columbus Short as well!
While Vergara may be known for her bombshell assets, her comedic timing on Modern Family is equally noteworthy. While the show has received countless awards, Sofia has yet to be rewarded for her individual work. Let’s hope the upcoming fourth season (this Wednesday, September 26 at 9 p.m. on ABC) will bring her closer to that milestone.
666 Park Ave.
Vanessa Williams has been a staple in primetime television (Ugly Betty, Desparate Housewives) for years and it looks like that’s where she’s staying. You can catch the blue-eyed Vixen this fall on the new supernatural drama series 666 Park Avenue where she plays the wife of a building owner.
This newlywed is shying away from her typical “girlfriend” roles to play a female detective who goes undercover as a maid in the house she grew up in to solve the murder of her close friend. Sounds juicy, right?! Infamous is set to premiere this fall. Laz Alonzo also co-stars.
Whoever said reality stars can’t parlay their success into a legit acting career must not know NeNe Leakes. The Real Housewives of Atlanta star currently stars in Ryan Murphy’s (Glee) The New Normal as the sassy assistant Rocky. It currently airs Tuesdays at 9:30 p.m. on NBC.
