Cosmopolitan Magazine really tried it.
Just last week (Apr. 2) the women’s lifestyle magazine made headlines for all the wrong reasons thanks to a listicle entitled, “21 Beauty Trends That Need To Die In 2015.” Trends that were deemed winners were titled “Hello, Gorgeous” while the losers were stamped with “R.I.P.” And to the surprise of many, the “R.I.P.” column was chock-full of minority women unlike the “Hello, Gorgeous” column strictly featuring Caucasian starlets.
Ruffling the feathers of many, the publication was hit with an uproar of disapproving comments on social media as those angry with the post were claiming to boycott purchasing future issues of Cosmo. Even model, Joan Smalls, who was featured in the “R.I.P.” category, shared her disgust tweeting:
“Really??? @Cosmopolitan What are you trying to imply …
#Tasteless#ThinkbeforeYouPost#Unfollowing.”
Cosmopolitan then issued an apology stating, “Empowering and supporting all women is our mission, and here, we fell short. We apologize and will do better in the future,” followed by a note on the edited post that explained, “This article focuses on beauty trends with images that represent those trends. Some images have been taken out of context, and we apologize for any offense. Celebrating all women is our mission, and we will continue to work hard to do that.”
Vixens, what do you think? Shady or nah?
