1. Know what you want before you start looking.
Most thrift stores are not organized, so it’s important that you know what you are looking for before you approach the store. It can be overwhelming stepping into a store without an idea of what you want. You have to say to yourself what you are looking for, so you don’t get lost in all the clutter.
2. Thoroughly search the racks
Often times, people tend to briefly look through the items hoping that they find something that stands out. Most of the time thrift stores are not in any particular order, so in order to find great pieces, one has to hack the racks.
3. Always wash clothes before wearing
Disgusting things travel in clothing, especially used clothing. You have no clue who previously owned the jeans you’re about to break into, so make sure you wash before adding them to the rest of your wardrobe.
4. Try things on
These stores aren’t always carrying your typical H&M and Forever 21 pieces, so be sure to use the fitting rooms. Because the clothes are mostly used, they may have a different shape than they would’ve if they were brand new. You may be a size 4, but you don’t know who previously wore and shaped them into a size 6.
5. Shop often
Because all of the items in thrift stores are one of a kind, you never know what cool things you may find. Thrift stores are getting in new items on a daily basis—sometimes hourly—and it’s important to be there when those finds come in. This doesn’t mean you should always spurge and spend money, buy if you are an avid shopper, you might as well find a good thrift store and visit it frequently.
6. Wear something comfy
This may seem like a stupid tip, but you definitely want to wear sneakers and easy-to-take-off shoes when going on a thrifting frenzy. You’ll probably be in there for longer than an average store and it’s going to get frustrating going in and out of clothing. Because you should always try before you buy, it’s imperative that you wear something that won’t annoy you when disrobing.
7. Do some research
If you are looking for something specific whether it is a certain style, specific items, or the highest rated thrift stores—you should do your research before you make a move. There are a lot of thrift shops out there catering to specific items.
