ABC 20/20 anchor Elizabeth Vargas recently checked herself into a recovery center for alcohol dependency, the Associated Press reports. She revealed that she was checking in while on vacation in an emailed statement.
“As so many other recovering alcoholics know, overcoming the disease can be a long and incredibly difficult process,” Vargas said. “I feel I have let myself, my co-workers and most importantly my family down and for that I am ashamed and sorry.”
ABC has said in a statement that they will stand behind Vargas and that they “look forward to having her back at ABC News when she feels ready to return.”
Vargas, who has been with ABC since 1996, had last checked into a rehab facility last fall due to struggling with alcoholism. She says that she has suffered with panic attacks since a child and that that’s what led her to drinking.
“I dealt with that anxiety, and with the stress that the anxiety brought, by starting to drink,” she said in an interview with Good Morning America.
The 51-year-old is receiving treatment at an inpatient facility and the length of her stay will be determine by her doctors.
