Last week, (Mar. 14), RiRi returned to the stage for her Diamonds World Tour in a sexy jumpsuit, but honestly what blew fans away was her opening act costume. For the look, the pop diva brought in Givenchy’s creative director Riccardo Tisci, who called the songstress a “representation of what young and amazing means today.”
Riccardo was up for the challenge. After all, creating hot looks is nothing new for this designer—Madonna wore his threads for her Super Bowl performance last year, and Kanye received flack for rocking his skirt on stage.
To kick off the show, Rihanna wore a custom made cape inspired by Givenchy’s timeless organza cape. The black floor-length ruffled silk crepe with 3D collar embroideries was the first piece to appear on stage before the costumes big reveal.
“I enjoyed making these looks,” Tisci told WWD. “Rihanna is punk and talented. She offers intelligence, energy and pure beauty. She is the face of her generation.”
Next the “Stay” songstress revealed a masculine over-sized black printed and hand embroidered parka, channelling Riccardo’s signature mix of streetwear and haute couture.
Under the parka, Rihanna wore a black and white nappa leather bra with gold stars embroideries and gold buckles. The pop star paired the multi-strapped bra with a pair of silk satin mini-shorts made in a matching print.
Riccardo enhanced her look with a shark tooth gold metal necklace with an engraved military plaque in the back—reading the word ‘RIRI’. Haute couture sunglasses with gold metal hardware elements and white crystal stud earrings finished the look.
According to Givenchy, the costume is a symbol of “female empowerment and urban haute couture elegance.” We couldn’t agree more.
