John Legend doubled down on his celebrations Thursday night (Dec. 8) at Catch in New York’s meatpacking district. Toasting his birthday and 10th anniversary of his debut album, Get Lifted, the man with the power pen brought many involved in his first project together and reunited old and new members of G.O.O.D. Music.
While most shooters were fixated on the presence of Kim Kardashian-West and Kanye, the people in the room were there to pay homage to Legend’s celebrated project. Legend—who admitted that he didn’t know if the public was ready for G.O.O.D. Music’s melodies—recalled Kanye jumping on tables while playing his music for several music executives. “He’s the next Stevie Wonder,” Legend recall Kanye saying.
As Q-Tip turned down his soul-rap blends so the crowd could sing happy birthday to the songwriter, his wife Chrissy Teigen and Kanye delivered kind words. “I just really quickly want to say congratulation to John, my husband, on his ten-year anniversary of Get Lifted. I’ve known him for eight years—the most important years—the other years were bullshit,” she joked. “They’re a bunch of cheating songs and a bunch of low down dirty bullshit [before those years], basically [laughs].”
While Teigen delivered a mix of humor and tenderness, Kanye, who introduced Kim to Queens MC Consequence for the first time, kept things even and focused on his friend. No rants. “I’m trying to get some pointers from him and stuff,” Kanye said. “Because I don’t want to be the Phil Spector of hip-hop or anything like that. But I really appreciate you being on the label and in our life and representing a strong image of what a human being and artist should be.”
