What in the world is Young Thug saying on Rich Gang’s song“Lifestyle”? It’s a question that we’ve been trying to answer for a few months now—and a question that we posed to a bunch of non-hip hop professionals recently. The consensus: Young Thug is saying…well, we have absolutely no idea. It’s pretty much impossible to decipher his words successfully and everyone seems to hear something different.

We still love Young Thug, though. Just like we’ve loved a lot of other marble-mouthed MCs in the past, despite the fact that, at times, we’ve been dumbfounded as to what they were saying on some songs. So after spending far too long trying to learn all the lyrics to “Lifestyle,” we gave up and instead put together a history of rappers we can’t understand. Say what, fellas?!

The Rapper: Ol’ Dirty Bastard
Why He Was So Hard to Understand: He had a gravelly voice and a propensity for yelling and loved to interject lots of nonsensical lyrics into his songs.
Why We Loved Him Anyway: Even though we didn’t always know what he was saying or why he was saying it in the way that he did, ODB was filled with a ton of energy. It was impossible to hear him on a track and not sit up and pay attention, even if whatever he was saying went in one ear and out the other.

The Rapper: Twista
Why He Is So Hard to Understand: He raps 8,425,631 words per minute (give or take a few) and rarely takes a second to breathe.
Why We Love Him Anyway: The Chicago rapper made a name for himself by rapping so fast that the Guinness World Records people once recognized him. But he has used his speed-rapping as more than just a gimmick. He’s also sounded right at home on hit singles like “Overnight Celebrity” and “Slow Jamz” and made his music accessible to more than just people who are fascinated by how quickly he can rap.

The Rapper: E-40
Why He Is So Hard to Understand: He uses a lot of slang in his songs and speaks with an accent that sounds unfamiliar to those outside the Bay Area.
Why We Love Him Anyway: 40 Water has introduced many, many, many words into the hip-hop lexicon. He has also proven himself to be a hustler in every sense of the word—he’s still releasing music steadily in addition to all of the side projects he’s involved in—and has come to represent the entire Bay Area thanks to his unique sound.
